Course Objectives

By completing this online continuing education program,

  • The participant will be able to list steps toward developing cultural competency.

  • The participant will be able to examine how structural characteristics of ethnicity, race, social class, and religion shape the contributions family makes to individuals’ values and attitudes about interacting with others.

  • The participant will be able to identify steps toward developing self-awareness of one’s own personal assumptions, beliefs, values, biases, and learned prejudices by exploring one’s own cultural contexts.

  • The participant will be able to articulate understanding about their patient and families’ worldviews in the context of their historical and contemporary causes and effects.

  • The participant will be able to identify intervention skills and tools necessary to build cross-cultural bridges that effectively enable families from different cultures and life experiences to feel positive about their interactions.
